What is Flourishing?

Updated: Apr 13, 2021

When you think of “flourishing” what comes to mind?

Take a moment to think………

If you are like me, you might be thinking of growth, nature, color, reaching your greatest potential, and living life to the fullest.

Hi, My name is Kirsty Fuller. I am a human potential coach, educator, and lifelong learner; nice to meet you!

FLOURISH (Verb): “To grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly favorable environment”

What does it mean for human beings to be flourishing?

The term “Flourishing” in positive psychology was coined by the renowned psychologist, former president of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Martin Seligman, who has written a number of books on the science of well-being. Here is an excerpt from the synopsis of his latest book Flourish.

"Traditionally, the goal of psychology has been to relieve human suffering, but the goal of the Positive Psychology movement, which Dr. Seligman has led for fifteen years, is different—it’s about actually raising the bar for the human condition.

Flourish builds on Dr. Seligman’s game-changing work on optimism, motivation, and character to show how to get the most out of life, unveiling an electrifying new theory of what makes a good life—for individuals, for communities, and for nations. In a fascinating evolution of thought and practice, Flourish refines what Positive Psychology is all about." (1)

Are you saying to yourself, “I want a good life”?

Seligman uses the term “flourishing” as a measurement of well-being and presents a rigorously studied theory of well-being using the acronym PERMA. He created this tool as a way for flourishing to be long lasting.

What does PERMA stand for?

“Flourishing rests on these five pillars of PERMA, each of which we value for its own sake, not merely as a means to some other end" (1).

P Positive Emotions

E Engagement

R Relationships

M Meaning

A Accomplishment

Seligman suggests that “every human being can say yes to positive emotion, engagement, better human relations, meaning and positive accomplishment in life. Say yes to flourishing and that is our hope for the future” (2).

Dr Lynn Soots so wonderful described in her blog post "The idea of flourishing is not something someone either has or does not have, it is an action-based process of knowing that in order to flourish one must engage in practices that develop momentum in flourishing". (3)

“Every human being can say yes to positive emotion, engagement, better human relations, meaning and positive accomplishment in life. Say yes to flourishing and that is our hope for the future”. (1)
